Young Geraghty, with two other lads, set off on an errand on Sunday morning one of the lads named Cook carrying a shot gun. It appears that while they were on the road the shot gun was being carried by Cook, who, as it was raining, kept his hand over the lock to exclude the water. He walked in the centre, with Geraghty on his left and the other lad, named Woods, on his right. Their attention was arrested by the appearance of game and Cook sharply withdrew his hand from the lock to get into shooting position. As he did so his coat sleeve caught the hammer of the gun as he raised it. As it slipped free of the sleeve the trigger fell upon the nipple with sufficient force to explode the cartridge and the whole charge entered the breast of the unfortunate Geraghty, killing him instantly. He just exclaimed 'I'm shot' and died before the horror-stricken friends could do any thing. Cook remained by the body and Woods hastened into Cooyar and informed Constable Statham of tho occurrence. He immediately went out and examined the body and afterwards handed it over to his sorrowing family. The remains were brought into Oakey and interred in the local cemetery."
