Svend Frederick William Johnson

  • Svend Frederick William Johnson was born on 25 May 1857 in Copenhargen, Denmark. Surname most likely Johannsen. Family hearsay had it that he ran away from home when he was 10 years old to join his uncle on sailing ships around the Baltic Sea, becoming ship wrecked several times. He allegedly jumped ship on a trip to Australia. He rarely spoke of his life before he came to Australia. He was fairly well educated, suggesting he may have been from a reasonably well off family.
  • At the age of 36 years, 7 months and 6 days, Svend Frederick William Johnson married Sarah Ann Kingston, daughter of James Kingston and Sarah Henson, on 31 December 1893 in St Paul's Church of England, Maryborough, Queensland. The most likely reason for this would be that due to the laws at that time, a foreigner could not own land and when he became married to Sarah she automatically became a foreigner ( A Dane the same as Svend) - Therefore they would have had to go to Maryborough which was the closest Government centre to them where he could begin the Naturalisation process which occured on 24FEB1894 - They no doubt took the opportunity to marry while waiting for his application to be finalised.
  • Svend Frederick William Johnson was naturalised on 28 February 1894; The certificate states he was residing at Fairymead, was a farmer, born 1860 in Copenhagen, Denmark and arrived in Australia on the "Scottish Prince" in 1879 (he would have been about 19 however the "Scottish Prince" never made a trip to Australia in 1879 and it was a British migrant ship not European.)
  • In May 1901 Svend Frederick William Johnson and Sarah Ann Kingston lived in Electra Street, Bundaberg.
  • Svend Frederick William Johnson and Sarah Ann Kingston appeared on the Electoral Roll in June 1909 living at Currajong Creek, Gin Gin, Queensland. Sarah's occupation was domestic duties and Svend's was a farmer.
  • Svend Frederick William Johnson died on 16 June 1920 in Gin Gin Hospital at age 63. (age 63 would be incorrect as all statements by Svend on his Naturalisation, Marriage, Birth of son Charles, Queensland and Federal electrol rolls regarding his age make him born in 1859 not 1857). His death certificate also showed he came to Australia in 1870, which would mean he arrived when he was 10 (taking 1860 as his birth year as given when he was Naturalised) or 13 (taking his birth year as understood by his family). This seems unlikely and 1879 seems to a more credible year for his arrival.
  • Svend was buried on 18 June 1920 in Gin Gin Cemetery.
