John Poxon

• John Poxon was born on 12 April 1859 in Clayhanger, Walsall, Staffordshire.
• He was the son of John Poxon and Eliabeth Robinson.
• He was John was a coal miner but later became a green grocer.
• At the age of 21 years and 15 days, John Poxon married Agnes Elizabeth Kingston, daughter of James Kingston and Sarah Henson, on 27 April 1880 in Primative Church, Norton Canes, Staffordshire. According to family Agnes met John, a coal miner while at work at the tobacconist. Her bridesmaid was Patience Kingston and their best man Frederick Poxon.
  
• John and Agnes were to follow the rest of the Kingston family to Australia but John suffered a serious accident and decided not to go.
  
• At the time of the 3 April 1881 census, John Poxon was living in the household of Emma Henson and John Bircher in Clayhanger, Walsall Foreign, Staffordshire. John is shown as a 41 year old bricklayer and local methodist preacher born Tamworth, living with his wife Emma, 40 born Clifton Stafford. His niece Rosa R Bircher 12 born Walsall Wood, and two lodgers John Poxon born Clayhanger, Stafford a coal miner, and Agnes Poxon 23 born Darlaston Stafford. Agnes was the sister of Emma. After Emma and John Bircher moved to Heath Hayes on the Cannock Chase, Rosa went to live with Agnes and John Poxton.

Her obituary read" The death occurred last week of Mrs. Lawton, sen., an old and very highly respected resident of Crow's Nest, at the advanced age of 75 years. The deceased, whose son Charles recently returned from the war, and who has been unconscious for the last three weeks owing to an accident while riding, was seized with a paralytic stroke 10 days ago, and did not recover consciousness! Mrs. Lawton leaves a family of three sons and three daughters."

Virginia Prewer-Docking

• Virginia Prewer-Docking was born on 2 August 1856 in Chevington, Suffolk, England. She was know as Virginia Prewer, her father using the name of his step father though he was never adopted by Mr Prewer. The name Doking was used for legal matters.
  
• At the age of 18 years and 1 month, Virginia Prewer-Docking married Amos Harriss in October 1874 in All Saints Church, Chevington.
• Virginia Prewer-Docking and Amos Harriss immigrated on 27 March 1876. Amos, 24 and Virginia 19 travelled on the Western Monarch leaving London on 9 Dec 1875. During the 5 month voyage Virginia suffered badly from sea sickness and she never went on board any kind of boat again.
  Amos found work with a dairy farmer at Kangaroo Point in Brisbane. They later moved to Toowoomba and worked in a confectary factory. However, indoor work did not suit Amos so he took a job on a farm at Gowrie Little Plains. He then worked on the Railway at Mitchell on the banks of the Maronoa River. Later they transfered to Toowoomba to do the same work and when the railway work had finished Amos selected land at Ravensbourne just outside Toowoomba and built a house in the scrub.
