  • On 31 August 1926 Carl Herman Schmaling's obituary appeared in Toowoomba Chronicle. It read:- "MR CARL SCHMALING

    Mr CarI Schmaling, who died in St Denis Hospital, Toowoomba, recently, was 74 years of age. He came to Queensland in 1862 with his parents when only nine years old and
    for many yeaers worked at Pechey and Munros sawmills. He was a carrier before the western railway was built.
    He used to go out to Dalby and often further with his loads. Mr. Schmaling was then living at Highfields. In 1880 he married Miss Caroline Volkmannand after giving up the carrying business, with his father and brother he went to live at Goombungee where land was selected.
    Disposing of his land, he bought a farm at Kilburnie, where he resided for a little over thirty years. His kindly disposition won him many friends. He was born in Brusso, Prussia, in 1858. His wife predeceased him 28 years ago. There are left left to mourn their loss, two sons and the daughters Mrs. A. Mittlestadt (Kulpi); Mrs. A. Voll (Kingsthorpe); Mrs. Les Boyle (Georgetown); Mrs. W. Simpson (Atherton).There are also 15 grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. J. Kahler senr. of Geham.
    survives him. The funeral took place at the Goombungee cemetery and there was a large gathering of mourners. The last rites were conducted by the Lutheran minister (Rev. Proeve) of Goombungee."

Many years of debate on behalf of William Groom and others resulted in confusiion. Christian was finally issued with new orders.
  • On 28 January 1895,his wife, Caroline Muller died in Queensland at age 77.

It read:- An old resident of Geham District, Mrs Marie Louisa Kahler died recently at the advanced age of 84 years, and she has left a family of 10 children, 57 grandchildren and 58 great-grandchildren. Mrs Kahler was born in Blomenfelde, Prussia and arrived in Australia when she was 12 years old, the voyage in a sailing ship taking 16 weeks. With her parents Mrs Kahler went to Cecil Plains, where sheep farming was followed. Later the family went to Cabarlah where they resided for many years. She was married in 1867 to Johan Joseph Kahler at Cabarlah, and after spending a number of years there she went to Geham where her husband select land then known as Bloomfield. There they lived for forty years and raised a large and industrious family of sons and daughters. Mr Kahler passed away about 21 years ago. There are seven sons Messers - Christie, Henry, August, Joseph (of Geham), Charles (Oakey), Fred (Dubbo NSW), and Ernest (Cecil Plains). The daughters are Mesdames Horn (Goombungee), Dunnemann (Highfields) and Skinner (Murwillumbah NSW.)
