  • On 27 August 1898 The Queenslander reported On the way is a monument, testifying to the self-sacrificing devotion of an old-time resident to a cause which is very much questioned by tbe majority of folk. It is the residence of a late Mr. Hartmann. In days gone by, so the local story goes, Hartmann's gardens were the Sunday resort of large numbers of Toowoomba people. Its cool tree-lined avenue leading into the grounds, the luscious fruit to be got there, the ferny dell, and the numerous other attractions, made the place one that was much frequented. Its owner became absorbed in the doctrines of the Theosophists, and among other things was convinced of his ability to civilise the Papuans through the medium of spiritualism. He obtained authoritive sanction to his scheme, went to New Guinea and laboured in the cause. He subsequently returned to Queensland, but after a short stay made his way once more to Papua. Fever attacked him, and he succumbed, and then it was found that his infatuation had had so firm a hold on him that he had willed the magnificent property to the Theosophists in India. Naturally, the place decayed, and as it now stands, its faded glory everywhere marked, one can not but regret that Mr. Hartmann had not laboured in a cause more worthy of his efforts. However, to the credit of-the Theosophists be it said, they relinquished, all claim to the estate in favour of the children, and In their possession it now is."
