John drowned - the Colonist reported "Death by Drowning.—On Thursday last another valuable life was lost in an attempt to cross the Waimea River. A young man named John Jordan started on Thursday morning from the home of his parents at Richmond to accompany a dray laden with his furniture, etc, which was to proceed to hia land at the Moutere, where he was about to settle. On reaching the Waimea River in a line with the Appleby road, Jordan, who was on horseback, went forward to examine the ford previous to venturing across with the dray. When nearly over the first ford, or the eastern branch of the river, liis horse, which had all the Way been getting too low down on the ford, suddenly dropped into the deep and narrow channel which occurs at the junction of the two branches. Horse and rider for a moment disappeared," but soon came up again, Jordan still retaining his seat in the saddle. It is probable that the poor fellow never attempted to make to the shore by the most direct course, and tried his horse at the steep and loose bank of gravel on the west side of the narrow channel, as horse and rider were again seen to fall back wider water, and when the horse again rose, Jordan had lost his seat. The horse swam down the river, and came out at a good landing place on the west branch but Jordan, who appears to have been unable to swim, was last seen struggling in the water a little more than 100 yards below the spot where he parted from the horse, and no trace of the body has since been discovered. The utmost exertions have been used to find the body, the universal respect entertained for his deeply afflicted parents having caused hundreds of persons to feel a lively interest in its recovery, but no success has yet attended these efforts. This young man was 23 years of age, the only son of his parents, and leaves to deplore his loss a young widow, to whom he had only been married a few weeks."
