Her father Robert was a labourer. They were married by Banns and witnesses to the marriage were William Moore and Robert Chivell who signed with his mark. The bride signed CHILELL.
  • Mary Jane Burt Chivell and John Honey Austin immigrated to Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia, on 19 June 1858 with their daughter Matilda Jane on the 517 ton barque the "Ascendant" from Plymouth, Devonshire. It arrived in Moreton Bay on 28 March 1858. The "Ascendant" carried 235 immigrants. John and Mary Ann's son was born during the passage to Australia. They named him Thomas Henry Ascendant.
  • Mary Jane Burt Chivell died on 6 February 1898 in Milford, Fassifern, Queensland, Australia, at age 63. The informant for her death certificate, her husband John Honey Austin, stated that she was 64 years old and died from acute gastritis having suffered for 20 hours. Her father's name was given as Robert Chivell, an overseer and her mother was Martha. She was born in Rowen Church Town, Cornwall and had been in Queensland for 39 years having been married in Pheleigh, Cornwall at the age of 22 years to John Honey Austin. She had nine living children:- Matilda Ann H 41, Thomas Henry A 39, Charlotte Jane 37, Harriotte Emily 35, William John H 32, Emma Louisa 30, Charles Edwin 28, George Edgar 25 and Arthur James C aged 22.
  • Mary was buried on 8 February 1898 in Teviotville Cemetery, Boonah, Queensland, Australia.
