Grave of Johann (1880-1972) and Martha nee Tegge Vashina (1878-1973) Crow's Nest Cemetery
  • Johannes Vasina was born on 6 October 1880 in Queensland. His parents farmed at Douglas.
  • He was the son of Franz Joseph Vasina and Katerina Perina.
  • At the age of 20 years, 8 months and 13 days, Johannes Vasina married Martha Wilhelmine Tegge, daughter of Friedrich (Wilhelm) Tegge and Louise Wilhelmine Zahnow, on 19 June 1901 in Queensland. (Johannes' name was spelt Johann Vaschina)
In 1976, one of their sons wrote:- "In June 1901 Johann Vaschina married Martha Tegge. They bought 160 acres of virgin scrub land half a mile north of where Haden is situated. The first year they lived in a little slab hut and the only income for the first couple of years was from maize which was grown after felling and burning scrub. As enough land was cleared and herbage grew, they managed a small heard of grade cows and started dairying, which was milking the few cows and taking the milk to Djuan where Mr Maurice Collins had a community separator set on a stump, about where the tennis court now is. Resonably early, they got their separator, separating a bout 15 gallons an hour. A few years later they purchased and adjoining 160 acres of land from the Dickhardt brothers. By this time, the dairy herd had increased and in 1914 they started a Jersey herd with five heifers and one bull. The Jerseys proved very profitable, and with the use of top quality bulls the herd increased in quality and production. After a few years, a 65 gallon separator was used, and later a 100 gallon an hour separator. About 1924 another adjoining 213 acres was purchased.
My parents were very active members of the Lutheran church and also of the Haden School, and helped in several community affairs. In 1910 Wahoon, now Haden, came into existence, and about this time for a few years there were fourteen families living from Haden to Djuan Dip. Now there are six, They next year, the Railway to Haden came into operation, and in 1912 the State School was opened.
Their first car, a Buick, was bought in November, 1927. This was also the year that a 4 unit Moffat Virtue milking machine was bought and was used till the early 1960's - milking up to 90 cows times. A Massey Harris tractor was bought in 1941. Up till then all work was done by horses. The average size piggery was conducted along with the dairying.
The Vaschina family consisted of four boys followed by three girls. There are 49 direct descendants of the original pioneers. Johann Vaschina died in August 1972 at nearly 93 years of age, and Martha Vaschina died in May 1973 at nearly 96. They celebrated their 72 ns wedding anniversary together.
