From 1968 to 1986 he was Deputy Chairman of the Wiltshire Quarter Sessions, recorder of Devizes, and later Recorder at the Crown Court, and finally a Circuit Judge (Western Circuit). He became a Barrister and subsequently a Queen's Councillor.
