  HOCKLEY, a village and a parish in Rochford district, Essex. The village stands on a hill, 1½ mile S of the river Crouch, 4 NW of Rochford, and 6 N of Benfleet r. station; and has a post-office under Chelmsford. The parish comprises 4,614 acres. Real property, £6,108; of which £65 are in fisheries. Pop., 798. Houses, 170. The property is much subdivided. High grounds here command some fine views. Wharves, and remains of an ancient bridge, are on the Crouch at Hull-Bridges; and the river there is fordable at low water. A pump-room with baths, and a hotel, were erected at a recently discovered medicinal spring; but they proved unsuccessful, and the pump-room is used as a Baptist chapel. There is a large barrow. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Rochester. Value, £165. Patron, Wadham College, Oxford. The church is Norman; has a massive octagonal tower; was founded by Canute, in memory of his victory over Edmund Ironside at Ashingdon; and has been restored. Charities £13.

Witnesses to the wedding were John Thorpe and Lucie Stone. Robert's profession was shown as a corn dealer. He was 25 years old, and Emily was 22. He lived in Hertford, she in Plumstead. Robert's father Henry was shown as a farmer, and Emily's father Edward Bright was also a farmer.
  
• Emily Ann Bright and Robert Kemp Jefferis immigrated to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, in January 1863. They came on the "Swiftsure" to the Port of Melbourne. Emily brought with her a sewing box that is still held by a family member today.
  
  

  The sewing box brought to Australia by Emily Ann Jefferis (nee Bright) when she and Robert Kemp Jefferis immigrated to Melbourne on the "Swiftsure" in 1863.

  Emily and Robert lived in Melbourne for a time after their arrival in Australia. Their first child Margaret Lockwood was born there. She died when she was only 16 months old in Ballarat. A few months later their second child, Edith Mary was born while they were living in Ballarat.
  
• On 29 March 1865,Emily Ann Bright's daughter, Margaret Lockwood Jefferis was buried in Ballarat Cemetery at age 1.
• According to family hearsay, Robert would leave Emily and go searching for gold. She often didn't know his whereabouts and it seems it was a habit he got into during their early married life. He must have left Emily and Edith in Ballart, possibly to avoid a jail sentence, while he travelled to Queensland. On 3 September Emily placed the following advertisement in the Brisbane Courier Mail. It ran until at least the 15th September 1866

• Emily Ann Bright and Robert Kemp Jefferis moved to Central Queensland in 1867.Robert must have "sent for" Emily, or returned for her himself because the small family travelled overland to Rockhampton meeting only one bushranger according to family hearsay.
• Between 1867 and 1882 they lived in various places along Central Railway Line. During this time five more children were born, three boys and two girls.
• On 11 October 1876 Emily Ann Bright and Robert Kemp Jefferis lived in Kent Street, Rockhampton, Queensland. Robert Kemp's occupation is shown as a railway contractor.
• About 1882 Emily Ann Bright and Robert Kemp Jefferis moved to Bundaberg . Edith's orbituary noted that she had come to Bundaberg 39 years before her death - probably about the time of the birth of their daugther Edith's baby, Bessie.

  General regret was expressed in town yesterday when it became known that Mrs Emily Ann Jefferis had passed away at the residence of her son Mr Arthur Jefferis of North Bundaberg. The deceased who had reached the venerable age of 81 years, was a very old resident, and was, with her late husband and family, widely known as highly respected. She accompanied her husband from Victoria to Rockhampton, the late Mr Jefferis holding the position of accountant to Messers O'Rourke and Sharry, railway contractors, who built Central Railways. On the termination of the contract, 39 years ago Mr and Mrs Jefferis came to Bundaberg and settled here. Mr Jefferis passed away some 24 years ago. The deceased leaves a family of three daughters, Mrs S H Chambers of Biggenden, Mrs Alf Faulkner of Alton, Burnett Heads, Miss Bessie Jefferis and one son, Mr Arthur Jefferis to mourn their irreparable loss, to whom general sympathy will be extended. The funeral will leave the residence of Mr Arthur Jefferis, Fairy-mead Road, at 2 o'clock this afternoon fro the General Cemetery, the arrangements being in the hands of Mr H C Garland.
• Emily Ann Bright died on 14 February 1921 in Fairymead Road, North Bundaberg, Queensland, at age 80. Emily's age is on her death certificate is shown as 80 years and 10 months. Her father's name is given as Henry Edward Bright, however her married certificate shows Edward Bright. Her death certificate states she was living 4 yrs in Victoria. She died of gradual senility. Informant of her death was Arthur Jefferis. Living children are given as Edith Mary 56, Anne 48, Arthur 43 and Bessie aged 39.
  
• Emily was buried on 15 February 1921 in Grave A2 P809, Bundaberg Cemetery, Queensland. Emily's son Arthur is also buried at that site.
