Edwin was in the Navy?. Clifford was an officer on a Canadian cargo ship. They used to correspond with Jack Hooper and his sisters. Their father (James Thomas?) had a printing business in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. They had a sister Dorothy too. The man who went to Canada (Edwin?) was said by his grandson to be a double with the photo of his nephew in Australia, George James Hooper." Also living with them were her niece Maria, a 21 year old glover and Mary Jane, aged 1, her nieces daughter. All the household was born in Merriott.

Thomas Henry Ascendant Austin (1858 - 1939) and Ellen Austin (nee Hooper) (1861-1941). Taken in Crow's Nest.

  • Ellen Hooper was born on 23 September 1861 in Maroon Station, Queensland. Her birth certificate states she was born at Logan River. This river ran through Maroon Station. At the time of her birth Ellen's father John was a working as a carrier for the station and his occupation on her birth certificate is given as bullock driver.
  • She was the daughter of John Hooper and Ann Burgess.
  • Ellen Hooper attended school in Purga State School in 1867.
  • At the age of 22 years, 3 months and 2 days, Ellen Hooper married Thomas Henry Ascendant Austin, son of John Honey Austin and Mary Jane Burt Chivell, on 25 December 1883 in Dugandan, Queensland. The marriage took place at the residence of John Thomas Hooper, Ellen's brother.
  • After their marriage, Ellen and Thomas moved to Coochin Coochin station where Thomas had found work. According to Ellen's obituary, Thomas had selected land at Coochin Scrub and the family lived there before moving to Crows Nest.
  • Ellen Hooper's and Thomas Henry Ascendant Austin's first child Thomas Henry Percy was born 2 November 1884. Unfortunately, he died a few weeks after his first birthday and was most likely buried at Coochin. Their second son George James was born the following February at Coochin Coochin and their daughter Beatrice two years later at Boonah.
  • Thomas and his family moved to the Crow's Nest district some time between 1888 and 1890. Their eldest son George attended school from Nov to December 1893 but then left. George was readmitted to the school in February 1895, while his sister Beatrice and younger brother Edgar (Thomas Edgar who was born at Crow's Nest in 1890) were enrolled in April the following year. The children's religion is recorded as O.D. Perhaps the children were home educated for some time. Three more children were born at Mountain Camp, Henry Leslie (Les) in 1892, Ruby Ann in 1896 and Elsie May, the youngest in 1900.
  • Ellen Hooper and Thomas Henry Ascendant Austin appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1903 living at Crow's Nest, Queensland. Thomas' occupation was a carrier, most likely supplementing his farming income by hauling goods. Ellen carried out home duties.
  • Ellen Hooper and Thomas Henry Ascendant Austin appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1913 living at Leonta, Crow's Nest, Queensland. His was a farmer. Their daughter Beatrice also lived on the farm as did their son Edgar.
  • Ellen Hooper and Thomas Henry Ascendant Austin appeared on the Electoral Roll between 1925 and 1930 living at Leonta Villa, Mountain Camp, Crow's Nest. Thomas was a farmer and Ellen carried out home duties. His son Edgar was still registered at Leonta but his wife Margaret gave her address as Crow's Nest.
  • An article appeared in the The Courier Mail on 11 September 1939 " CROW'S NEST - The death is announced of Mr. Thomas Henry Ascendant Austin, of Mountain Camp. He was born on the vessel Ascendant, on which his parents came from England. They settled at Coochin, near Boonah. In 1883 he married Miss Ellen Hooper at Boonah, and they came to the Crow's Nest district, where Mr. Austin had lived until the time of his death. He is survived by a widow, two sons — Messrs. G. J. (Virginia) and E. Austin (Mountain Camp)l, and three daughters — Mesdames E. J. Connolly (Rosewood), S. C. Barker (Crow's Nest), and J. Cochrane (Manly.)"
  • Ellen Hooper died on 29 September 1941 in Crow's Nest, Queensland, at age 80.

  • On 4 October 1941Ellen Hooper's obituary appeared in The Toowoomba Chronicle. It read:- MRS E AUSTIN, CROWS NEST
    Crows Nest, Friday- An old pioneer of the district, Mrs Eileen (sic) Austin, passed away on Sunday. Her late husband (Mr T H A Austin) died on September 1, 1939. Mrs Austin had reached the age of 80. For 50 years she had lived in the Crows Nest District. Before her marriage she was Miss Eileen (sic) Hooper. She was married to Mr Austin at Boonah on December 25, 1883. Later they took up land at Coochin Scrub. From there they came to the Crows Nest district a little over 50 years ago. They again settled on the land at Mountain Camp, and for many years Mr Austin was engaged in hauling timber from Munro's scrub to the mill. Mrs Austin leaves three daughters, Mrs S Barker (Mountain Camp), Mrs E J Connolly (Rosewood), and Mrs J Cochrane (Manly), and two sons George (Virginia) and Edgar (Mountain Camp). The funeral, which took place to the Crows Nest cemetery, was largely attended. The Rev. S G Munro officiated at the graveside.
