  • At the age of 21 years, 7 months and 28 days, Margarethe Mengel married Herbert Augustus Thomas Shum on 1 July 1876 in Volunteer Arms Hotel, Toowoomba, Queensland. Herbert was the fourth son of Captain Henry Hamilton Shum of St John's Wood, London, England. They settled in the Palm Tree area of Perseverance. Several of his sons worked at Munro's mill.
  • On 1 November 1880 A public meeting was held at Herbert's residence concerning the erection of a school - probosed to Glenvale State School - at Spring Creek, Drayton. Herbert is mentioned as being "late of Mr Wonderley's" suggesting he previously worked for him [Joseph Wonderley was a chemist who had arrived in Toowoomba in 1862]. He was elected secretary.

  • Anna Nikolina Christina Menzel and Johann Matthias (John) Reimers immigrated on 24 December 1865. Johann and Anna immigrated from Holstein, then part of Denmark. They arrived on the La Rochelle. The family lived in a number of places (Ipswich, Toowoomba, Stanthorpe, Toowoomba) before settling on a farm of 80 acres at Shirley where they grew oranges and grapes to make wine.
  • On 29 September 1919,her husband, Johann Matthias (John) Reimers died in Shirley, Queensland, at age 83. He died from Senitity, nephritis and cardiac failure.

  • On 12 April 1932 Anna Nikolina Christina Menzel's obituary appeared in Toowoomba Chronicle and Darling Downs Gazette. It read:- MRS. J. M. REiMERS. CAWDOR, Thursday.- There passed away on March 6 one of the oldest residents of the district, in the person of Mrs. J. M. Reimers, at the age of 95. She well and truly could be classed as one of those worthy pioneers who helped to
    blaze the track f or others. Of a kindly disposition, straight-forward, and reliable, she won the sincere regard of a wide circle of friends. She was born in Holstein (Germany), and with her husband came to Queensland in 1865. Their first two years were spent in Stanthorpe. They came back to Toowoomba f or a few years and eventually settled down in what was then known as the Highfields scrub (now called Shirley) where over 50 years ago Mr. Reimers laid the foundation of the
    now famous citrus orchard and vineyard. Mr. Reimers died 13 years ago. Mrs. Reimers leaves three sons and three daughters: Messrs. J.M. Reimers (Toowoomba), Charles G. (Haden), and W. H. (Shirley). The daughters are, Mrs. F. Abel
    (Toowoomba), Mrs. J. Peters (Gowrie Little Plain) and Mrs. B. Gowlett (Haden). There are also 50 grand children and 52 great grand children. The remains were interred at the Cabarlah cemetery, the Rev. A. Reuther officiating at ths

Carroll, of Warwick, Queensland, and Mr. Keith Werner, fourth son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Werner, of Ross Hill.
    The bride wore a lovely hand-embroidered veil with her long gown of ivory satin, and carried an armful of arum lilies. Miss Dossie Jaggers, in a dainty frock of pink georgette with trimmings of black velvet, attended the bride.
    Wearing long gowns of pale pink georgette with bandeaux of tulle and field daisies, little Misses Thelma and Iris Carroll acted as flower girls.
    Mr. Charles Werner was the best man.
    After the ceremony, Mrs. Carroll, in a smart frock of navy crepe-de-chene with trim mings of white, and Mrs. Jaggers, sister of the bridegroom, who chose a frock of black moracain, received the guests at the reception."
