Alfred William Merritt

  • Alfred William Merritt was born in 1843.
  • He was the son of William Merritt and Elizabeth Harding.
  • At the age of 27 years, Alfred William Merritt married Lucy Harris on 24 May 1870 in Toowoomba, Queensland. They were married at the residence of Lucy's aunt by Rev J H Rogers. At the time Alfred was living at Highfields.
  • Alfred William Merritt was of the Primitive Methodist faith.
  • On 24 May 1879 Alfred Merritt was the chairman a morning tea held at Albert Mills to farewell Rev R A Bailey of the Primitive Methodist Church. Messers Stone, Case, Cossart and Bailey all spoke. Edward Pechey was unable to attend. Rev Bailey gave his final sermon at the Crow's Nest Court House the following day.
  • In 1880 Alfred was the first secretary of the Highfields Shire Council.
  • He. On 10 Nov 1880a fund raising event was held for the ensuing the newly built Perseverance Primitive Methodist Church, which cost £41, excluding gratuitous labour, was opened free of debt. Joseph Cossart acted as steward for the meeting which was chaired by Rev Thomas Thatcher, and attended by Mr Munro, Mr Littleton, Mr Mitchell, Mr Stone, and Mr Merritt. A special thanks went to William Gunter.
  • In January 1889 Alf Merritt resigned from the Merritt Creek State School committe. His position was filled by G (?)Buzzacott.
  • Alfred William Merritt died on 22 January 1902 in Queensland. The Brisbane Courier reported:- " The funeral of the late Mr. A. W. Merritt, town clerk of Toowoomba, who died suddenly yesterday, took place this afternoon, and was very largely attended. The Mayor (Alderman C. Rowbotham), all the aldermen, including those just elected, and many past aldermen, were present ; also a large number of prominent citizens, the employees of the corporation, and others, The municipal offices heree were closed during the day, and all the business places along the line of the funeral procession closed their doors as a token of respect to the deceased gentleman. The services at the grave were performed by the Revs. J. G. Martin and R. H. Blaimiers, Wesleyan ministers, of the Toowoomba circuit, of which the deceased was a prominent member. Numerous wreaths and flowers were laid on the coffin."
  • Alfred was buried on 23 January 1902 in Drayton & Toowoomba Cemetery. PUB2-1R3-0011.
