Oscar Charles Schaefer

  • Oscar is remembered by his fostered cousins (niece and nephew of his mother) as "a hot headed cruel person always ready to pick a fight". But he was also considered a good farmer and kind neighbour. He bred prize winning cattle and kept a very neat and tidy farm. He bought 500 acres of McDougall's land when it was split up around 1939.
    After his father's death in 1950, his mother returned to Nutgrove to live with Oscar. She gave him her block of land and he worked all three until his death.
  • Oscar Charles Schaefer died in December 1973 in Queensland at age 58. He died from cancer. He was condisered an alcholic by his family. He willed his land to his neighbour and drinking mate Jimmy Schloss "who did noting to earn it". After his death Kate remained in the house until she was taken to a nursing home in Kingaroy.

On this particular job I found that three men were employed well under the award rates. This matter has been taken up with the District Secretary to have an Industrial inspector visit this place. Emu Creek Sawmill — at this place I found the accommodation was in a bad state, no light was provided, no brooms, no showers, no veranda, ' no wash basins or washing tubs, and no dining room. These men at this mill are eating their meals in their sleeping quarters. Also, at Crow's Nest, a young girl was employed at the Private Hospital under the award rates'. This matter was taken up with the matronin charge and the arrears for six months were paid to this girl. Harrison Saw mill; Crow's Nest; firewoood depots. Crow's Nest, called on as follows: W. Breise, A. F. Hillenberg, E. Emerson, P. Guy. Men on Hampton Road works ; M.R.C. r/n, Hampton-Esk ' Road; bridge building; Crow's Nest Shire employees (three small gangs) ; Pechey Forestry; Nukinenda Station — at this station arrears of wage's for £3 6s. 4d. was collected on behalf of an employee who is now in the fight ing forces; Lyndhurst Station; Eskdale West, also Eskdale South Station; Esk Butter Factory; Anderson's Sawmill, Esk: Eskdale Station. At all of these stations I found unfinancial members. Tickets were issued and orders signed. Berry's Joinery, Esk; Toogoolawah Sawmill; Private Hospital, Esk; Somerset Dam, also clearing gang: sawmill."

  • His first job was at Borah Water Holes and Goombungee, then part of Gowrie Station owned by Colonel King, where he shephered sheep. He worked with a brother, camping with the sheep and relying on his family to supply their food. He was paid £20 a year.
    He once made a trip with five thousand drought struck sheep to Cunnamulla with only one person to help him, an aboriginal. He was a shearer and often rode 500 miles to Cunamulla to follow the shearing circuit and be home for Christmas. He also did fencing, and was contracted to the railway.
  • At the age of 23 years, Frederick Mathias Christy Schefe married Maria Franciska Knack in 1883 in Queensland. They settled at Muniganeen, also known as Prickly Pear Gully (between Goombungee and Meringandan.)
  • In 1893 Frederick Mathias Christy Schefe and Maria Franciska Knack moved to Bergen where they took over Fred's brother's selection. John had been drowned during a flood the year before. Here they built a slab hut with a large fireplace big enough to hold the camp oven used to bake the bread. The vine scrub was felled, cleared and planted to enable dairying to commence. The cream, sometimes only a small amount, was sent to the depot near the Bergen school. It was then sent to Meringandan, and from there by rail to the Silverwood Butter Factory in Toowoomba. A factory was later built at Crow's Nest and then one at Goombungee. Fred was director of the factory until it closed.
    Fred was the Chairman of the Bergen School committee. He was also involved with the Farmer's Union and the Goombungee-Haden Show Committee.
    Meanwhile Mary ran the local Post Office for a number of years. The mail would arrived by pack horse and was sorted for neighbours to collect three times a week.
