Max Lowien and his brother, Roy, aged 14 1/2; years, had been playing with a pea rifle during the morning, and shortly after 4 o'clock on Sunday afternoon they left him to bring in the cows. There was in the house a 22 calibre revolver, and the boys must have taken this. They had just left the house, and were only a few paces from the front gate, when Max was seen to fall. His uncle, who was driving along the road, asked what was wrong with Max, and the elder boy answered, 'Nothing.' His uncle got off the trap, and went to the boy, who was bleeding, and had been shot just over tho heart. Death was instantaneous. The older boy said he was not aware that he had discharged the revolver, but becoming frightened, he threw the weapon away. Later, he showed Constable Johnson, of Meringandan, where the revolver was. In the year 1885 the couple and their family migrated to Australia and first lived at Highfields for about fifteen months. They then selected 160 acres of land at Djuan where they lived for the rest of their lives. The four children of the family were all born in Germany - Wilhelm, Gottfried, Heinrich and Earnestina.

Wilhelm, who married Caralone Morgenstern before coming to this country selected land at Upper Djuan and engaged in farming including dairying, pig raising, maize, wheat and potato growing. They reared a family of five boys and five girls.

Gottfried Wolski who was married at Douglas to Elsie Morgenstern carried on the property previously selected by his father and engaged in the same type of farming as his elder brother, this being the main industries in those days. They raised a family of five boys and three girls.
