    Another Downs pioneer Mr Edmund Wilcox, who had resided in Toowoomba for about 60 years, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 83 years. The late Mr Wilcox who was born in Monmouthshire, England came to Australia with his parents when quite young. He received his early business training with the firm of Messrs Cribb and Foote (Ipswich), and later with the firm of Messrs Holberton Bros, of Toowoomba. Severing his connection with the latter firm he engaged in business on his own account and with his brother, the late Mr Robert Wilcox, founded the firm of Messrs Wilcox Bros, who carried on business of merchants at Ruthven Street Toowoomba, for a number of years. He was keenly interested in farming pursuits and was recognised as an authority on real estate values on the Downs. For very many years he was an ardent worked in the Nell Street Methodist Church. He was a trustee for a long period, and was treasurer of the trust until declining years compelled him to retire. He married Miss Fanny Elizabeth Coombe of Campbelltown Tasmania in 1884, and the surviving issue of the marriage are Dr S E Wilcox (dentist Toowoomba), Messrs Cliff and Gordon Wilcox (graziers Hughenden district), Mrs A E Lavers (Toowoomba), Miss Daisy Wilcox and Mrs W Stark (Brisbane). There are also eight grandchildren. The late Mr Wilcox was predeceased by his wife about a year ago."

  • Wesley Wilcox died on 29 April 1949 in Liena, Tasmania, at age 79. He disappeared into bush. The Mercury reported on 5 May 1949 Elderly Man Still Missing At Lorinna. There is still rio trace of Mr. Wesey Wilcock (80), who has been missing from his home at Lorinna since Friday. Yesterday, 70 searchers, led by Insp. G. Wright and Sen. Constable J. H. Sherriff, searched the country within a radius of three miles of his home. It is thought Mr. Wilcock, who until about three months ago lived at Liena, may have tried to reach his son's place there, become exhausted on the way, and wandered into the bush. The search will be continued."

    The Examiner reported two days later "DESPITE an extensive search yesterday, there is still no trace of Mr. Wesley Wilcock (80), who has been missing from his home at Lorinna since April 28. Yesterday's search was conducted by Trooper Singleton, of Railton. The biggest search party yet organised will scour the locality at Lorinna tomorrow."

    The Advocate on 11 May "POLICE SEARCH ABANDONED
    Little hope is held for the discover of the elderly Lorinna resident-Mr. Wesley Wilcock (80) -who has been missing from his home since Friday, April 29. The search by - the police has been abandoned. Several Lorinna
    residents, and some relatives of the missing man, intend to continue the search."

    On 3 October the Examiner - "Body Found
    THE body of Mr. Westley Wilcox, of Lorinna, aged about 80, who has been missing for the last five months, was found yesterday by Mr. Arthur Wilson. The body was discovered by Mr. Wilson about a mile from the home of Mr. Wilcox's son. An inquest will be held at Sheffield."

    And finally the Advocate on 15 October "THE FAMLY of the late Mr. Wesley Wilcox wish to express their sincere thanks to all kind friends and relatives for letters, cards, telegrams, floral tributes and personal expressions of sympathy in their sad bereavement, especially thanking Senior Constable Sherriff and all who helped during the search in Lorinna. Will all please accept this as a personal expression of deepest gratitude."
