Ivy Matilda Spies, aged 4 1/2 years, was burned to death at Kulpi on Friday afternoon, during the absence of her mother, who had letf the home for about half an hour to take some lunch to her husband, who was ploughing in a paddock about three-quarters of a mile away. The body, all the clothing on which was destroyed, was found close to a younger member of the family who was playing on a rug. According to information received on Saturday by Inspector O'Brien, the mother informed the police that she had left the deceased, who was the eldest, in charge of three other children, while she went on horseback with the lunch for her husband. As she was leaving the little girl Ivy called out : "Don't be long, mummy.'' When the mother was about to enter the house by the back door she saw the child laying on the floor with only her shoes and stockings on and life then appeared to be extinct. Mrs. Spies communicated the news of the tragedy to her husband, and they returned to the house, but the child was beyond all aid. The mother thinks that after she had gone the girl walked into the kitchen where there was a fire in the stove, and by some means her clothing caught alight. Realising her danger the child probably ran back into the house, and by so doing the flames spread all over the body."
