  • In August 1910 Ferdinand was struck by a train. A report of the incident appeared in "The Courier Mail" on the 31 August. It read:-Age's Immunity. There are two fortunate old persons in Queensland, for they have just come through railway accidents without much injury. A report received by the Commissioner from the Traffic Manager at Toowoomba states that an old man was seen walking along the railway line at 1.05 , and the driver of an approaching train sounded the whistle and applied the brakes. The man was apparently lightly struck by the engine and knocked down. The Government Medical Officer examined him on his arrival at Toowoomba, and found he was unhurt except for a few skin abrasions His name was Ferdinand Abell and he was said to be 82 years of age. In the second instance, Mrs Wilson was boarding the train at Albion as it was moving off, and was dragged along the platform for about 10 yards before, the tram was stopped. She was unhurt. Mrs Wilson is nearly 8O years of age , she expressed regret for her action in attempting to board a moving train, and said that "nothing of the kind would happen again."
