  • Sergeant Eric George (Taffy) Bailey was born on 14 October 1906 in New South Wales.
  • He was the son of Arthur Peter Bailey and Jane (Janey) Bush.
  • On 16 March 1927 Eric enlisted in the NSW Police Force and commenced training at the Police Depot in Sydney. He served in Sydney until 17 September 1928 when he was transferred to The Rock about 20 miles from Wagga Wagga. From there he transferred to Gundagai. After serving three years there he was stationed at Narrandera, Deniliquin and Balranald.
  • At the age of 22 years, 1 month and 10 days, Sergeant Eric George (Taffy) Bailey married Florence May O'Connor on 24 November 1928 in Redfern, New South Wales.
  • Sergeant Eric George (Taffy) Bailey's father Arthur Peter Bailey's died on 28 Jan 1937. His obituary was published in The Courier Mail. It read:- "The death is announced of Mr. Arthur Peter Bailey, 71 years of age. He lived most of his life in Tenterfield, where he was born. About 10 years ago, owing to indifferent health, he left his native town and sought relief in some other climates, latterly living in Glen Innes. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. Bailey, of Tenterfield, and in 1887 married Miss Jane Bush, who predeceased him 13 years ago. He is survived by six daughters - Mesdames J. P. Cooper (Tenterfield). G. Hulyar (Paddington), R. de Leon (Sydney), L. Croft (Newcastle), J. Norris (Sydney), C. West and two sons - Messrs. A.T. (Tenterfield) and E. Bailey(Balranald.)"

  • On 20 April 1939 he was transferred to Moruya. Constable Eric Bailey was highly commended by Commissioner McKay for bravery, cool-headedness and devotion to duty in the arrest, during a violent struggle on a ferry, of an interstate criminal at Bateman's Bay on 19 July that year.
  • In January 1943 he was again highly commended by the Commissioner and granted six months seniority for conspicuous bravery in the rescue of survivors from the fishing trawler, Durenbee, which was torpedoed 17 miles off Moruya by the Japanese on 3 October 1942.
    During the rescue he took a five ton launch out to pick up the survivors, earning him a certificate of merit from the Royal Shipwreck Relief and Humane Society of New South Wales and the commendation of the coroner.
  • On 4 January 1945 Eric was transferred to Blayney. Eight days later he spoke to a man, Cyril Norman, in Adelaide Street whilst on duty at about 8.30pm. During the questioning, Norman pulled a gun from his pocket and shot Eric in the stomach. Eric grappled with the assailant but two more shots were fired. He managed to hold the offender to the ground until assistance arrived. Eric then instructed his helpers on how to handcuff Norman. He then arrested him.
    Eric died shortly afterwards in hospital not knowing the man he had arrested was a dangerous criminal who had only three days before had committed a brutal murder.
    Norman was sentenced to death for the murder of Eric.
    For his bravery Eric was posthumously awarded the George Cross. He was also awarded a promotion to the rank of Sergeant as he had passed all of his examinations for promotion.

  • On 4 September 1917,her husband, James Herbert (Herb) Gillies died in Queensland, Australia, at age 30. A niece recalls "James Herbert died from lock jaw from a cut he received on his toe while he was chopping wood. His sister Alice always carried a picture of him in her locket as she was very close to him. After his death in 1917 her next son, was named after him."
    The Brisbane Courier, however, reported "The sudden death is reported of Mr. James Herbert Gillies of Emu Creek, from heart failure (our Crow's Nest correspondent wired yesterday). The deceased, who leaves a widow and two children, was 29 years of age, and highly respected. The funeral was largely attended, the Rev. Pope conducting the service at the graveside."
