At 17 years of age he decided to migrate to Australia with his sister Johanna. Two years later the rest of the family migrated to Australia also and lived on a property at Highfields. He met and later married Maria Friedrica Bozler at Highfields on 3 October 1894. During this time he worked for an orchadist and also on a station property to make some money to pay for his land at Glencoe.  Later Johann and his wife built a home on their property and also added to it by buying the neighbouring properties from Charles and Gotfried Kanowski. They remained on the Glencoe farm for the rest of their lives rearing a family of seven, six sons and one daughter.
