Born in Childers, Queensland, he was educated at state schools before becoming a sugarcane grower. He was president of the Australian Sugar Growers Association. In 1920, he was elected to the Queensland Legislative Assembly as the Country Party member for Burrum Burrum, transferring to Isis in 1932. He was Deputy Leader of the Opposition from 1944 to 1947. He retired from the Assembly in 1950, but in 1954 was elected to the Australian House of Representatives as the Country Party member for Wide Bay, which he held until his retirement in 1958. Brand was knighted in 1965. He died in 1979."

John Brass

  • John Brass was born in 1849 in England. He was the son of Michael Brass and Sarah.
  • His marriage, at 22 years, to Rebecca Lemmon was registered in the June 1871 Quarter in Sunderland, Durham Registration District.
  • John Brass and Rebecca Lemmon immigrated to Queensland on 7 February 1877. John 28, and Rebecca 25, travelled on the
    Galmis with their two children John 3 and Sarah A aged 4.
  • John was a teacher. on 29 April 1879 he was transferred from Pimpama Island School to Crow's Nest as the head teacher. The school had been opened on 12 March 1877 with Mr Jenkinson being the first teacher, followed by Mr David Moylan. Both had been at odds with the Department and not popular with the parents. However John was both efficient and popular but it appears not in robust health - a fact drawn to the attention of the School Committee by the Department. He died while in September the following year and was replaced by Samuel Jackson.
