M, b. 1 August 1787

Johann Friedrich Christof Albig

M, b. 10 August 1790, d. 17 February 1868
  • Johann Friedrich Christof Albig was also known as Frederick Heiss.
  • He was born on 10 August 1790 in Kochendorf, Germany.
  • He was the son of Georg Peter Albich and Marie Salome Hessinger.
  • At the age of 25 years, 5 months and 13 days, Johann Friedrich Christof Albig married Johanna (Rosina) Heiss, daughter of Georg Michael Heiss and Rosina Magdalena Kubach, on 23 January 1816 in Wurtenburg, Germany. Registered at the parents of the bride and groom were Georg Michael Heiss (father of bride), Rosina Magdalena Heis (mother of bride) George Peter Albig and Maria Salome Albig father and mother of groom)

According to a researcher in Germany, Rosina and Frederick had 13 children, but only 4 lived to adulthood. Three of these, Lorenz, Adreas Jakob and Magdalena Rosina came to Australia, Lorenz and Magdalena Rosina with their parents in 1855.
  • In August 1854 Frederick, Rosine and their two children Lorenz and Rosine applied to emigrate to Australia. Rosine (younger)'s date of birth was given as 31 Dec 1835. The date of birth of the other three was not recorded. They were all noted as born in Koschendorf District of Neckarsuim.
  • Johann Friedrich Christof Albig and Johanna (Rosina) Heiss immigrated to Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, on 13 February 1855. Frederick's immigration record showed him as Friedrich Albrih, 45, travelling with Rosina aged 54 presumedly his wife, Rosina 19, and Lawrence 35. They came to Australia on the "Undine". However the Victorian Immigration records show another family, the Albich family had travelled on the "Undine" bound for Melbourne - this family consisted of a W Albich, 49, travelling with Rosine aged 47 presumedly his wife, Rosine 18, and Lorenz 27, presumedly their son.
According to an article published by the Burwood & District Family History Group, shipping arrangements for some emigrants fell through because of the lack of numbers and the passengers had to be re-assigned. A surviving passenger contract for Frederick Albrich and his family shows the family were stranded when no suitable ship could be found for them. This would account for the different information held by the Victorian and NSW immigration authorities.
The cut off age for assisted immigrants was 50. However, hopeful passengers often gave incorrect information in order to qualify for assisted passage. Frederick was most likely amongst their numbers, since his son Lorenz stated his age as 35 and Frederick was only 45 on his application. Frederick was at least 58 when he arrived in Australia, perhaps older.
An article on German immigration "Auswanderer nach Australien" shows a family consisting of Christopher Albig (1790-1863), Roas born Heiss emigrated to Australia in 1854. Both died there. It says their three children Lorenz, Andreas and Rosine travelled with them. There is no record of Andreas in either the NSW or Victorian immigration records, but its believed he came to Australia later under the name of Jacob Andrew Heiss. Although the ages differ, Lorenz and Lawrence are likely the same person.
  • Between 1855 and 1856 Johann Friedrich Christof Albig and Johanna (Rosina) Heiss lived in "Wyangarie" Station, Upper Richmond. Their grandaughter Rose Bailey (nee Werner)'s obituary written in 1952 states that the family were living at "Wyangarie" Station on the Upper Richmond (near Tabulum) before they moved to Tenterfield. Frederick's immigration details show he was assigned to Wellington Cochrane Bundock of Richmond River owner of "Wyangarie" Station.
Although Frederick and Rosina came as assisted passengers, they were by no means poor. According to their application, Frederick Albich had 300 fl, was a farmer, well digger from Bauer und Brunnennacher.
Frederick's son Lorenz died after a fall from a horse at the station in 1856, eighteen months after the famiy arrived in Australia. Perhaps Frederick and his wife and daughter moved to Tenterfield after the accident.
  • On 23 February 1860,his wife, Johanna (Rosina) Heiss died in Tenterfield, New South Wales, at age 66. Rosina's death certificate shows she was born Wurternburg, Germany and had been in New South Wales for 5 years. Maiden name Heiss, her father was a farmer. The informant was her son in law Louis Werner. Husband's name Frederick Albig. She was 66 years old and died of dropsy.
  • Sometime after Frederick came to Tenterfield, his name was changed to Frederick Albig Heiss The reason for the name change is unclear. He may have changed it to Heiss after Jacob Heiss (his son, Andreas Jacob Albig) joined him in Tenterfield in 1857, although his wife Rosina was buried under the name of Albig in 1860.
  • Johann Friedrich Christof Albig died on 17 February 1868 in Tenterfield, New South Wales, at age 77. On his death Frederick Albig was registered as Frederick Albig Heiss. He was a well sinker, aged 77 and he died of natural decay after a 7-day illness. There had been no doctor in attendance. His parents names were recorded as Unknown. The informant was his son-in-law Louis Werner of Tenterfield. The undertaker was Jacob Heiss (Frederick's son whose birth surname was Albig), minister Arthur Rutledge (Wesleyan) and witnesses were Henry Bachfield and Charles Krahe. Frederick had been born in Germany, and had been in NSW for 12 years. Frederick had married at age 26 to Johanna Rosina Heiss and their children were Laurence, Rosina (twins since deceased), Christian 41, Andrew 38, Jacob 35 and Rosina 31.
  • Johann was buried on 19 February 1868 in Tenterfield Cemetery. He is buried in an unmarked grave in the Methodist Section Row C/Lot 24.

Lorenz Andreas Albig

M, b. 29 May 1816, d. 18 May 1856
  • Lorenz Andreas Albig was also known as Lawrence or Laurentz Albick.
  • He was born on 29 May 1816 in Kochendorf, Germany. His death certificate states he was born in Wurtemburg. He was a twin to his sister Rosina who died in infancy.
  • He was the son of Johann Friedrich Christof Albig and Johanna (Rosina) Heiss.
  • Lorenz Andreas Albig's and Dorothea Bonhag's son Johann Martin Bonhag was born 1841. He took his mother's name as many couples of that time were married in the church. However, the marriage was not registered with the authorities because they couple could not afford the large free required. They often had several children before the fee was paid and the marriage registered.
  • At the age of 29 years, Lorenz Andreas Albig married Dorothea Bonhag in 1846 in Kochendorf, Germany. According to a German researcher, Lorenz left his wife in Germany when he came to Australia.
  • In August 1854 Frederick and Rosine Heiss and their two children Lorenz and Rosine applied to emigrate to Australia. Rosine (younger)'s date of birth was given as 31 Dec 1835. The dates of birth of the other three were not recorded. They were all noted as born in Koschendorf District of Neckarsuim.
  • Lorenz Andreas Albig immigrated in January 1855to Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, with his father Frederick, mother Rosina and sister Rosina. Frederick's record showed him as Friedrich Albrih, 45, travelling with Rosina aged 54 presumedly his wife, Rosina 19, and Lawrence 35. They came to Australia on the "Undine". Their three children Lorenz, Andreas and Rosine travelled with them. While there is no record of Andreas in either the NSW or Victorian immigration records. Although the ages differ, Lorenz and Lawrence are likely the same person.
His origianal application to emigrate stated his wife was emigrating with him, but his illegitimate son, surnamed Bonhag, was remaining behind. At the time of application he was a baker and day labourer. His wife never came with him, but his son Johann Martin Bonhag who was only 15 when his father left for Australia, followed him later on the "Gottorp" in 1857 - with Jacob Andrew Heiss (Albig), his uncle. Unfortunately Lorenz had already died when Johann arrived in Australia.
  • Lorenz Andreas Albig died on 18 May 1856 in "Wyangarie" Station, Casino, New South Wales, at age 39. Laurentz died when he fell from his horse. His name on the death record is Laurence Albick, father Frederick Albick and mother Rosina. He had been in NSW for 18 months and was born in Wurtenburg. His spouse is listed as Dorothea, and his age at Marriage was 30 years. Witnesses to his death were George Alcock, Thady Walsh, Nathan Taylor, Henry Harrison, Joseph McLeod, Price McKillian and John Swan. The informant was Charles Moore Clerk of Petty Sessions Casino.
Rose Bailey (nee Werner)'s obituary written in 1952 states that the family were living at "Wyangarie" Station on the Upper Richmond (near Tabulum) at the time of his death.
  • Lorenz was buried on 19 May 1856 in Casino Cemetery, New South Wales.

  • Magdalena (Rosina) Albig was also known as Rosina Johanna.
  • She was born on 31 December 1835 in Kochendorf, Heilbronn, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
  • She was the daughter of Johann Friedrich Christof Albig and Johanna (Rosina) Heiss.

  • She moved to "Wyangarie" Station, Upper Richmond, in 1855.Herrfather and brother Lorenz were assigned to work at the station. It was here that her brother was killed when he fell from a horse in 1856.
  • At the age of 21 years, 6 months and 12 days, Magdalena (Rosina) Albig married Louis H R Werner, son of Louis Henry Werner and Josephine Unknown, on 12 July 1857 in Tenterfield, New South Wales, Australia. The marriage was officiated by Timothy McCauley /McCarthy?, in the "Church of Rome". Witnesses to the marriage were X Abbig and Catherine Hedley. The name Albig was spelt ABBIG throughout the certificate. The place of birth of the bride and groom, parents name and occupation were all given as NOT KNOWN.
  • In 1858 Magdalena (Rosina) Albig and Louis H R Werner lived in on the corner of Miles and Scott Street, Tenterfield, New South Wales.
Louis and Rosina's daughter Rose (Rosina Bailey)'s obituary written in 1952, gives details of where the Werner family lived. "The Werner home was situated at the corner, near the intersection of Miles and Scott Street and occupied the site where later the Curren home was erected. Mrs Bailey was born in 1862 and was the third child in a family of eight. Two of this family still survives, namely Miss Louisa retired hospital matron, and George, both of Sydney."
  • On 27 December 1861 the Werner home was struck by lightning, rendering a young man [perhaps John Bonhag, Rosina's nephew] unconscious, almost hitting a baby in a cradle [Francis Louis Albig Werner who would have been 16 months old], and causing considerable damage to the house.
The Maitland Mercury reported the incident:- " SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS - This town was visited by a very severe thunderstorm on the night of Thursday and morning of Friday last. The storm commenced about five o'clock on Thursday afternoon, and continued with great violence until nine o'clock, when an abatement of a few hours took place, the heavens being partially clear, and perfect quiet reigning all around. However, another storm came up from the west ward about three o'clock on Friday morning, which exceeded in violence the preceding one, and startled the inhabitants from their repose. Indeed, such a severe storm has not been experienced in this neighbourhood for a considerable period. The only damage to the township which we have learned occurred at the house of Mr. Louis Werner, which was struck by the electric fluid and sustained material injury. The chimney was the attracting medium, which was literally destroyed, and the lightening, passing down both sides of the fireplace, where the wood is reduced to splinters, tore up the earthen floor and raised a quantity of dust which almost smothered the inmates. It then found its way into another chamber where a young man slept, striking him so that he lay insensible for a considerable time. The electricity then seems to have scattered about the building in all direction, causing the greatest confusion, when it ultimately found a good conductor in a cross-cut saw which was suspended from one of the rafters. The rafter and a number of the shingles of the roof were thus destroyed, and then the work of destruction ceased.
It may be deemed very providential than none of the inmates were fatally hurt, as three separate rooms were occupied by them. A young sleeping child in a cradle had a very narrow escape, as its head was within a foot of the cross-cut saw which conducted the electric fluid though the roof. Others took place on Friday afternoon and Sunday."
  • Magdalena (Rosina) Albig died on 24 April 1905 in Tenterfield, New South Wales, Australia, at age 69. The informant on her death certificate was her son, Richard (Herman). The certificate shows she was 69 years old, born in Kochentorf, Germany and 49 years in NSW. Her parents were listed as Frederick Albig, an engineer and Johanna Rosanne Heiss. She had been married in Tenterfield at the age of 22 to Louis Werner and had 8 living children, Hannah 47, Louis 46, Rose 43, Charles 41, Richard 37, Elizabeth 33, Louisa 31 and George 27. She had one deceased son (Frederick) and one deceased daughter (Catherine). Her cause of death was heart disease and she died from heart failure.
Her death was reported in the Sydney Morning Herald on 10 July 1905 - WERNER-April 24, 1905, Rosina Johanna Werner, at Tenterfield.
